The debate about Artificial Intelligence and education is one that has taken many different turns over the last decade. At Ascentis, as an Awarding Organisation, we are investing time to explore AI in more depth to assess its benefits and challenges.
When we start to explore how the evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping education, particularly in the context of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), we can see that the integration of AI in education is rapidly expanding. This presents educators with both opportunities and challenges. Recent articles have shed light on the evolving responsibilities of educational institutions in adopting AI, especially in assessments. The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ)‘s updated guidance on AI use in assessments reflects this changing landscape. It includes real-life examples of candidate malpractice involving AI, insights on authenticating private candidate work, and clearer guidance on AI use in marking.
Jisc has also contributed significantly to this discourse, particularly in the Further Education sector. Their articles highlight how responsible AI usage can benefit both teachers and students, fostering participation in the changing educational and societal landscape.
But how does this relate to ESOL? The impact of AI on education extends to ESOL learners as well. As technology evolves, so do the tools available for language learning. AI-powered language learning platforms offer personalised experiences, adaptive feedback, and immersive environments, all of which can significantly enhance the learning journey for ESOL learners. The next steps are likely to be full voice recognition software allowing discourse and even assessment enabled by AI.
Additionally, AI can assist educators in tailoring instruction to meet the diverse needs of ESOL learners. By analysing data on student performance and engagement, AI can provide insights that inform targeted interventions and support strategies, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for ESOL learners.
However, with these advancements come challenges. Educators must navigate issues of accessibility, equity, and ethical use of AI in ESOL education to ensure that all learners have equal opportunities to succeed.
This all leads to a fast-changing environment for institutions and individual facilitators leading ESOL classes. This is why we sought out a partnership with Metaverse Learning, a global leader in the transformation of education, learning and assessment through the use of Extended Reality (ER) including Virtual Reality (VR), Virtual Environments (VE) and Augmented Reality (AR). Through this partnership, we have launched an immersive learning tool which not only increases engagement and enhances learner confidence, but also provides personalised learning and accessibility. This is all developed and updated by us, so that the onus on embracing new technology is not falling on the education provider.
By harnessing the power of AI and immersive learning, we aim to revolutionise ESOL education, providing learners with the tools and support they need to succeed in their language acquisition journey.
As we embrace the transformative potential of AI in education, it’s crucial to remain vigilant, proactive, and inclusive in our approach, particularly in supporting ESOL learners on their educational journey.
